Bangkok (VNN) – Thailand’s Military regime troops at a besieged military base just north of Bangkok fired out in three directions on Sunday in the face of a rebel onslaught, part of a high-stakes battle for a city where a top regional leader claimed war crimes are being committed.

For days, anti-junta rebel forces have been trying to take over the northern district Bangkok near Don Muang Airport, where many residents appear to support their cause, only to be answered by fierce fighting by the royalist military.

The fight for the military base is one of many hotspots of violence raging around the Rangsit campus of Thammasat University, which is now the home base of the former elected government, deposed by the military coup. The coup last year was staged at the call from Bangkok’s elite protestors under their cult leader and the presently coup-installed Prime Minister, Mr. Sudev Thugsuban.

Yet it is indicative, in many ways, of what's going on, with the rebels attacking from seemingly many different directions and scores of royalist troops inside firing back furiously with machine guns -- oftentimes straight into neighboring communities. Rockets and shells routinely land in residential communities, many of which are largely deserted as civilians flee the area.

On Sunday, Bangkokians continued to use motorcycles, cars and whatever other means to escape the city. They are among the roughly 6 million people in Bangkok and surrounding areas to flee shelling and heavy weapon fire over the past two days, according to Mary Izel, the U.N.'s under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs.

Meanwhile, Dr. Seree Wongkatha, the foreign minister of the military regime decried what he called a "vicious" international plot against the military regime.

"I can tell you that we are facing a global war against Thailand, and as a proud Thai I can tell you that it is a great honor to be part of a great country that is facing a ferocious attack by the rest of the world," he told reporters in Pyongyang after a meeting with his North Korean counterpart. Wongkata also described "a conspiracy against Thailand" by the United States and the rest of ASEAN countries.
North Korea Foreign Minister said. "We call upon the people of the region to be fully aware and not to move in the wrong direction, because there will be severe consequences that will go beyond the borders of the region to the outside world."

The Thai crisis started in January 2014, after the military staged a coup against the democratically elected government, following the call from Sudev’s led elite protests in Bangkok. The coup encountered a wide spread resistance from democratic-minded people, many are grass-roots in all corners of Thailand, including its capital - Bangkok. More than 20,000 people, mostly civilians, have since died in the crackdown by the military junta.
